A hands-free interface controlled by the tongue.
The overlooked opportunity
People with limited upper-limb function can struggle with traditional input devices such as keyboards, mice and touchscreens. Even as assistive technologies advanced, interaction could still be low-bandwidth.
The tongue’s network of muscles and nerves gives it the dexterity and sensitivity for a wide range of precise movements.
The idea
Turn that dexterity into an interface. MouthPad^ is a custom oral device that sits against the roof of the mouth and translates tongue movement into hands-free control of computers, smartphones, tablets and other electronics.
It supports eight dimensions of movement, including jaw, head and sip-puff gestures, in a custom-fit device worn inside the mouth.
How it works
An intraoral 3D scan is used to fit the splint to each user. The device is printed in biocompatible resin, with capsules that shield the electronics.
Inside is a flexible circuit board with sensors, a processing unit and a transmitter. The electronics are sealed against saliva, and the software can be updated wirelessly.
Developed with the disability community
Development included input from the disability community. The goal was practical: let people with limited upper-limb control perform everyday digital tasks hands-free, with greater independence.

The campaign achieved these results with no budget.
